MARY DIAZ
Mary Diaz is a fiber artist, writer, activist, ancestral skills advocate, mother and wild spirit. She is most at home in the forest, the primary source of healing, wisdom, connection and transformation, for herself and the world. The practice of making—working with her hands—has always been an essential and humbling cornerstone in her life. She has worked nationally and internationally as a visual arts counselor and portfolio coach. She was the Assistant Director of Admissions at the California College of the Arts, has worked as a photojournalist in the Chinese fair trade tea industry, a marketing and brand developer, and freelance writer and photographer. Weaving is the living metaphor of her life; working with complexity and opposing forces to create a unified, dynamic, expansive whole is a life calling she explores in a myriad of forms. Her personal project, Gather The Universe aims to be a platform for shifting cultural ethos towards slow fashion, ecological/feminist advocacy, natural beauty, simplified living and radical social activism. Mother to 2 young children, her work and life aim to fully embody her own femininity—itself a subversive act—confronting a culture which teaches women 'power' or 'success' must come in spite, not because of their feminine aspects.
She has a BFA and an MFA, is a producing member of the Northern California Fibershed, a 2 year graduate of the Radical Aliveness Institute, and a dedicated tantrika.
